CARINA data - data is now available at IFM-GEOMAR

CARBOOCEAN is making the assembled (and recently extended) CARINA data set publically available. CARINA (Carbon dioxide in the Atlantic Ocean) was an essentially informal and unfunded project (organized by Ludger Mintrop and Douglas Wallace from the IFM-GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany) that aimed at bringing together previously unavailable data sets into a common inventory. Since the beginning of CARBOOCEAN the original data set has been expanded significantly, metadata have been assembled, data files have been organised and placed in a common format, and a "Level 1" quality assessment has been largely completed.

Most of this recent work has been conducted by CARBOOCEAN partner Robert Key from Princeton University, USA.

PRELIMINARY DATA IS AVAILABLE AT IFG-GEOMAR

At a recent international workshop it was decided to make these data available public immediately. Users must note however that the data contributed by different orginators are not necessarily internally consistent with respect to accuracy, calibration scales, etc. Some data in the collection are of questionable quality and have been "flagged" accordingly for later checking. A 2nd Level Quality Assessment is presently underway which will recommend corrections to the data in order to produce a consistent data set suitable for large scale syntheses. Until this is completed, users should exercise caution in the the use of the data.
